About the artist.

Hi, I’m Mary, an artist who is inspired by the beauty of the world around me whether that's an impossibly beautiful view of the afternoon sea or a fleeting glimpse of an emotion on someone’s face and even the quiet interior spaces and thoughtful objects that mirror my inner feelings. My paintings rejoices in colors, textures and forms and looks to celebrate contrast and emotions, playing with light and dark and markmaking. I work mainly in oil on canvas, layering and building up depth and textures. I find my painting process an excavation, carving and building to find the image and the nuance of the subject matter. Scaling and wiping to find the right tone and imprint. I want to show the history and the echoes of myself with the colors and marks on the canvas akin to leaving my finger print on the work.

My paintings are about my life, people around me, my travels and objects that have secret meaning for me. I paint the “petites jokes” of my life. Through my work I hope to evoke a sense of joy, wonderment and curiosity and to invite the viewer to consider the simple pleasures of connection with people places and things around us that reflect on their own lives and experiences.
